When do we go for Doubly Reinforced Beam (DRB)

We prefer Doubly reinforced beam in the following situations:

  1. Doubly reinforced sections are generally resorted to in situations where the cross sectional dimensions of the beam are restricted (By architectural or other considerations).
  2. Where singly reinforced section is not adequate in terms of moment-resisting capacity
  3. Doubly reinforced sections also used in a situations where reversal of the moment is likely.

The presence of compression reinforcement reduces long-term deflections due to shrinkage and creep. All compression reinforcement must be enclosed by closed stirrups (fig1), In order to prevent their possible bulking and to provide some ductility by reinforcement of concrete.
