Loss on ignition is a test used in inorganic analytical chemistry, particularly in the analysis of minerals. It consists of strongly heating (“igniting”) a sample of the material at a specified temperature, allowing volatile substances to escape, until its mass ceases to change. This may be done in air, or in some other reactive or inert atmosphere.
- 10 gm of cement is taken on platinum crucible and heated up to a temperature of 900 to 1000°C for 15 minutes
- The loss due to moisture and carbon dioxide causes weight loss which should not be more than 5% for all cements
- A high loss on ignition can indicate pre-hydration and carbonation, which may be caused by improper and prolonged storage or adulteration during transport or transfer

- The test for loss on ignition is performed in accordance with ASTM C 114 & AASHTO T 105
